You can go to a specialist company who may charge you a lot of money to install and set up your TV. These companies are geared more towards specifying and supplying a complete AV system - they aren't really geared up to just pop round for a couple of hours to fit your equipment. We are a bit more than a handyman service. We fix things all the time. And our whole business is about offering an efficient, value-for-money service to our customers.
My walls sound hollow. Can a big TV be hung from a plasterboard or 'dot and dab' wall?
Definitely ... though we would do a free survey first to check the condition of your wall. Many newer houses are constructed using plasterboard 'dot and dab' walls where, instead of applying a solid plaster backing coat to the masonry and skimming over, to save time the builders just stick sheets of plasterboard to the wall with spots of adhesive. You might be lucky and hit a nice blob of adhesive which will take a wallplug, but more likely you won't. Remember that some screens, especially plasma screens, are heavy (as much as 50kg), so choosing and fixing the mounting brackets requires extreme care to ensure your screen stays on the wall! Definitely a job for the professional. Comet will tell you that you can't fit a TV to a 'dot and dab' wall ... well you can! Take our word for it - we've done it very successfully.
Can you hide the cables?
We usually conceal your cables completely in the wall but this obviously takes a little longer and would mean your installation costing a little more. If you'd like your cables on the wall surface, we do that too. The choice is up to you. We do the complete installation including any replastering and redecoration to make good.
I get poor digital reception and the picture keeps locking up. What can you do?
Digital TV (especially Freeview through an aerial) is a lot more sensitive to a good signal strength than the old analogue system. If you have poor signals then the TV becomes unwatchable as the picture freezes up. This may be caused by a poor set-up (antenna, downlead, poor connections etc) or from impulsive interference from cars and other equipment (so called TETRA - terrestrial radio interference from Taxis and the like). However, there is a lot that can be done to improve the signal - using better quality downlead, masthead amplifiers etc. This is definitely an area that Handiworx can help with - from installation of a new antenna right through to checking your TV and 5.1 channel home cinema set up (including sound levels) to give you the optimum home cinema experience.
Do I need an Electrician to wire in a TV supply?
Yes you do - to comply with Part P of the Building regulations and to ensure that fire regulations are complied with. Handiworx provides a qualified electrician, as well as being very experienced in home cinema installation.
